Tummy Time

Hugh HATES tummy time. He cries the entire time and it's miserable for all involved. Any suggestions on making it easier?

Ever since Sal was tiny, he has HATED tummy time, with a passion. I started doing it like they said...right from the beginning. He just screamed and would shoot his little limbs out, it was terrible. Then I had this genius idea that really worked for us. I took one of my couch pillows and laid him on it so that he was more on an incline. It looked like it would be uncomfortable, but he stopped crying. Then we got one of those silly tummy time mats with the water in it and a few toys and he REALLY liked that. It made tummy time much more bearable. When he was old enough to watch Baby Einstein and actually found it engaging, I always had him watch from his belly. It encouraged him to really pick his head up high, and then I knew we had gotten a good half hour of tummy time in. Distraction, distraction, distraction...good luck. Please post what ends up working. I am always looking for new ideas!!

My boys hated it too! But the more they did it and the stronger they got and the happier they were. Does it count as tummy time if you're laying down on your back with him laying on your chest so he can look into your face? I remember doing that too. Before you know it he will be rolling and then he won't mind so much once he's in control. He's adorable!

Baylee hated tummy time for a while too. I kept doing it and one day she didn't cry. I also used the bobby to prop her up a little. I also agree with the tummy time on your tummy. I think that it helped with her neck strength just as much as if she were on the floor. Hugh is getting so big! He is still so baby baby cute. Just wait...it just gets better and better every day! Good luck! :)

Hi Ann Marie! It was fun to read your comment on our blog. This is all new to me so I am not very quick about it! Congrats on your little guy--He's adorable. We're not far behind--just 4 weeks!

Something that i've found is pretty cool is using the boppy pillows and put toys or anything entertaining in front of him. That way, at least he's entertained. So cute, love his little bum!

Savanna hated it too. But I was a bad mom and I didn't push it much. She still learned to hold her head up, roll over, sit up, crawl, and walk right on track. But try giving him a pacifier (if he takes one) and that will help.

Most babies hate tummy time and so don't feel like Hugh is unique. Like previously said, he'll still learn to do everything if you don't force it. One thing that helped with my kids is if I got down on the floor with them. When they are so small and can't lift their head, their view point is so limited. So, if you get down with them, they don't feel so alone. Also, toy mats designed for tummy time can help with that poor vantage point.

BOTH of my boys hated (hate in Paytons case) tummy time! What can you do! Not much...I just put him on his tummy when he is happiest in the day, and most alert. He of course gets mad, then I put him back on his back-play for a while, then start the torture again! It's hard being a baby you know!

Brooklyn hated tummy time, so I hardly ever did it, until one time I did it and she just rolled over. After she could roll, she didn't mind it. It is really hard to do when they just scream. Good luck!

My boys have never liked tummy time. I just don't do it very often until they are closer to 4-6 months old. Then I let them have some tummy time. Usually this is after they have started to try to roll from back to front. Good luck! I love the little puppy on the seat of his pants. TOo cute!!
